Molly Fish Shaking Head? Twitching, Shimmy Back and Forth?

Topic: My aquarium Molly Fish are shaking sometimes and acting weird. Almost like twitching back and forth. What does it mean? I need some help? I’m fairly new to owning a fish tank and hope I setup everything correctly.

Molly Fish Shaking Its Head?

Your Molly fish might be shaking its head because she is stressed. If she is sitting still and wiggling its called the shimmies. Check your water to be sure its not that stressing her. Mine do it sometimes but I never know exactly whats bothering them. They have always come back from it though so its not deadly or even treatable just be sure there is nothing you can do to improve the water conditions. I advise getting a test kit to see what your nitrates are. Here is a link and picture:

You could also go the easier route and use the Tetra test strips. They are a small piece of paper that you dip into the tank water and they change colors. A little more expensive but still work very well. Here is a link and photo:

hey Ppl I got a pair of mollies in my 10g tank and the female was pregnant and she’s shaking. if im not mistaken it should be one of the signs that she’s about to give birth. question is do I have to separate the male from her? the male seems to follow her everywhere. help pls.. TYSM! HMFK!!

My male bugs the crap out of my girl too…while she’s eating, giving birth, whatever… You only need to separate them if you want to try & save the babies, but they need to be separated from mom too.

My male Molly bugs my female too…. no matter what she is doing…. I was told that male Molly’s actually need to be in tank with at least 3 other females… so he doesn’t just pick on one… The males Molly’s are always the alpha fish of the tank.

oh so I have to separate the one now? or after the fem gives birth?

I’d say that’s up to you, just keep in mind they’re going to eat the babies if given a chance. Do you have places they can hide? My tank does, but I think some babies still disappear.

They say to separate the prego…. before giving birth.. then remove mom after she gives birth.. I didn’t separate mine… I have handfuls of babies… but I think half of them got ate.

That was tragic. Yea i have a couple of live plants and some ornaments. Got to separate then now. This is my first time to have a pregnant molly so i wont take any risk 🙂 btw how many fries do they usually spawn?

what your female is shaking and you are thinking that she is going to have babies then sorry to say its totaly wrong.

she can be pregnant but shaking is the shing of ill or ill-treatment done to her…..did you checked your water…..if she is still shaking then get a heater and change 50% water and increase pH level of your tank cause mollies love brakish water and temp. and high pH will help and work so mind my words she need help…..

and if you want your babies to survie then either you can remove mommy to another tank for delivery or include many hiding shites un your tank and remove all fish EXCEPT live bearers and molies……good luck……

add some aquarium salt in tank 5gm fr 5gl…..it will increase pH level of your tank…..good luck.

mollies use to have an average of 40-60fries at a time but the world record made by a female of 362fries at a time is really awesome….this record is still unbeaten…..

i have read in a forum that shaking is either a sign of what you’re talking which is called shimmies, or..  it could also be a sign that she’s about to give birth. i have normal water parameters and she’s in a good shape, colour and appetite. Normal gills.

temperature and new placement can effect so do more research on your fish that if she is ok….give her some food and watch carefully that is she is eating them well or not….or is she is truing to hide..  …..and pls send a pic…..then we will suggest what yo do next thanks…..good luck.

Not exactly a Molly question but this is my only fish board on FB.  Can anyone figure out what the problem is with my danio fish?  I only had one left and they’re supposed to school so I bought 3 more 2 weeks ago.  Well one of the new ones died the next day and and then one died a week later (I thought maybe I messed up the transfer or maybe the fish store didn’t have quality fish).  Now my original danio looks like he’s about to kick the bucket… shaking and has red spots.  I tested the Ph, Ammonia and Nitrates…all fine… I don’t have any other test kits.  Do you think there is something else wrong with the water, or could it be a disease the other fish brought in?  And if it is a disease will it affect my 3 mollies and my platy?  (so far mollies and platy look fine).

I’ve ran into many zebra danios issue (bad stock, went through about 20 of them before finding a stable group).

I’d say bad stock and no to it being passed on to other fish, although I can’t say for sure without a photo.

i just took like 30 pics and i can’t get one that’s un-blurry enough to see the little guy, my camera keeps focusing on other fish or the background… he’s got red discoloration near and behind his gills, looks like little spots, and he is shaking mostly at the bottom of the tank but sometimes darts very quickly.

Yeah could be bad stock or it was just there turn to go u don’t know how long they have been in the shop.

She’s still chasing the other females around and today she was swimming in one spot shaking side to side I’m pretty sure she’s pregnant but don’t know what to do so I got her in fish bowl to herself just incase.

The shimmies are from stress. I would put her back in the tank as she will not survive long in a bowl with no air or heat. You will want to check the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings in your aquarium to see if that is the cause of the stress. Also how many gallons and how many fish do you have? How long has the tank been set up with fish?

Return her to the tank this bowl is no good and will stress her, there’d no heat or filtration she does not look heavily pregnant so I don’t think she will have any babies. What water conditioner do u use? I recommend seachem prime it helps with stress and also removes chlorine etc. You could also try to get some esha 2000 and dose the tank with that as it treats a range of diseases. Have you tested your water? What kind of test kit are you using? How long have you had this fish?

Well that’s one of the first things that you need to do is buy a liquid testing kit, api master tester is good. You must test your water regular as it will give u a much better idea of what’s going on.

She is possibly pregnant but you may want to clean out your tank and then put her in a hospital tank just to be safe with your other fish.
